Debra was new to NYC but figured it would be fun to meet new people so she signed up on a mailing list of people who needed female flag football players in the city. The guy who was organizing it eventually dropped out so he passed it on to Hubert, who led the first practice. Hubert was the male QB and Debra was the female QB, and during their first game she threw him the game winning touchdown…and the rest is history! 5 years later he proposed to her!

What is your color scheme and why did you pick those colors?
Dusty blue, gray and ivory are our colors, and Hubert actually was the one who picked out the colors!  When we first started discussing colors, Hubert suddenly looked down at his sweater and asked ‘what about these’ and we both instantly realized that was it.  Debra loves the soothing colors and finds it appropriate that gray is included, since Hubert owns about 20 gray sweaters…(not exaggerating)

Description of your gown? Why was this “the one?”
Lace, fit and flare with a sweetheart neckline. It was the first dress I tried on that I loved and 3 stores later when I finally brought my mom and sister along, the consultant took one look at me and said, “I have a dress in mind for you”.  Out came the first dress and I knew it was the one!

Advice for other brides planning their wedding?
VENDOR SELECTION!! Make sure your vendors are not only professionals with a lot of experience but also a personality match. No matter how much you plan ahead, life (& indecisiveness) happens and you should feel comfortable enough to collaborate and discuss how to bring your vision to life.

Why did you choose your wedding venue?
Hubert’s family used to play golf here together (even his sister who never plays golf) and the one picture of Hubert, Hubert’s mother displayed at her desk at work, was a picture of them here.

Debra’s cousin officiated the wedding! He did a fantastic job of making it personal, yet funny and lighthearted! There vows made me tear up as you could tell from what they shared how much they have been through together. Heres a glimpse of what they said to each other during the ceremony:

Debra: One that I just couldn’t get out of my head was something I found over a year ago, from a little Sandra Bullock from com movie, called ‘Hope Floats’, and it goes something like this: “Beginnings are always a little scary, and Endings are always a little sad, so it’s the middle, the journey that we must make the most out of”.  I keep coming back to this because of our journey together so far, where there have been moments that I have felt overwhelmed with love that I can’t even articulate. Here are the highlights:
~When we first started dating in the city, and I was making nothing, so we had wine and cheese dates on the floor in your room.
~How happy we were even though we were huddled around the one heater that worked in a shack in North Carolina that was the coldest winter in decades, just you, me, the dog and Warren the hamster.
~When we moved to Atlanta and you started traveling around for your dream job, consulting, and I was so lonely by myself in a new city.  And one day you told me how upset you would really get, when something would happen and you would want to tell me right away, but you couldn’t because you had to run to another meeting.  And I realized that you really missed me as much as I missed you.
I know our journey won’t be easy, and it won’t be perfect, but we’ll be perfect for each other.

Hubert: I could not wait to say these words to you. Everytime something random, hilarious, unexpected, and just plain crazy happened to us, I tried to file it away and tell myself “remember this!”, almost as a reminder to myself how interesting and fun my life has become spending it with you.And that’s what it really is. Spending time with you. Living life with you, experiencing things, seeing your reaction and thoughts. Making me love my life because of you. And realizing how time spent without you is time not well spent. I’d like to think that little Debra and little Hubert were reading Calvin n Hobbes at the same time, practicing the same scales on the violin, walking through similar school hallways to the same classes, not watching cable tv at the same time, and learning about the world, one little piece at a time, at the same time. And the beautiful truth is it’s only going to get better. There’s always now been an US, when before it was just me and you. It’s not lost on me that you’ve decided to spend the rest of your life with me. Because I know I’ve been ready to spend my life with you. It’s just amazing that we both feel the same way. How lucky I was to finally meet you. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us. I promise to always love you. For you, and forever.

What are some of the unique items that you will be incorporating in to your wedding?
~Flower Girl Dresses: One of Debra’s bridesmaids is a designer and she is making custom flower girl dresses that will be revealed to Debra the day of!
~Asian Scrolls: Hubert comes from multiple generations of painters/sculptors.  One of his uncles, who is a professional calligrapher in Taiwan, created scrolls for Hubert & Debra to display for their wedding.
~Wooden Card File: Debra has always been a rabid reader so she tried to infuse as many book elements as possible.  Finding the wooden card file to use for guests to find their placecards was a great excuse to purchase this new piece of furniture! 
~Lighthouse Sign: Hubert’s mom passed away 2 years ago. She always loved the beach and lighthouses so we commissioned a drawing from one of Debra’s childhood friends to create this memorial
~DIY elements: Debra ended up with a lot more DIY elements than she anticipated.  These include: the ring pillow, the flower girl baskets, a wine cork display tray and book origami decorations!

During the parent dances, Debra danced with Hubert’s dad and Hubert danced with Debra’s mom. Halfway through the song they switched..it was super sweet!

What flavor is your cake?
Vanilla with alternating tiers of strawberry and hazelnut fudge filling

Where are you going on your honeymoon?
Japan & Hawaii!  Japan has always been one of our top 3 destinations, and we’re lucky that we get to piggyback it off of a friend’s wedding in Hawaii too
